Giving Tuesday: Claire's Army for Pediatric Cancer Patients

As children demonstrate resiliency in the face of cancer diagnoses, Claire's Army supports them and their families to navigate difficult circumstances and maintain a sense of normalcy.

Named in memory of Claire Ratliff's endless love and optimism, The Army dedicates its work to supporting families' daily responsibilities and eliminating stresses so they can spend as much time with their children as possible. In doing so, the organization helps sustain a sense of normalcy and offers a community of support for families experiencing pediatric cancer.

Claire's Army offers three primary programs to support the needs of every patient and family facing pediatric cancer at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital and Atrium Health Levine Children’s of Charlotte, NC.

Through Claire Packages, the Army gifts totes full of essentials–including towels, journals, personal care items, and gift cards for groceries and gas–to make each child and their family's stay in the hospital more comfortable.

Its Meal Program partners with local restaurants to deliver made-to-order meals for each family, reducing financial burdens for parents and fostering quality time amongst families.

Lastly, its Emergency Assistance program pays bills on behalf of families who face financial burdens due to the costs of treatment. Assistance includes mortgage and rent payments, utilities, travel needs, and funeral expenses.

There are many ways to get involved with Claire’s Army and support pediatric cancer patients.

Claires Army Gala 2021

Claire's Army hosts its annual Gala in August to raise funds for its multiple programs. This black-tie optional event fosters connections between donors and the patient families they support.

"Claire's Army has a positive and immediate impact on families who are fighting childhood cancer. Karen was one of Claire's nurses that took care of her at Novant Health Hemby. It is amazing to see her legacy live on and touch so many more lives," says Brian Hinkle, Manager of Infrastructure, Operations, and Security at Amicus.io. Brian and his wife Karen, pictured left, have been supporters of Claire's Army since its founding.

Volunteers can support specific events, offer office assistance, deliver dinners with the meal program, or host Claire Package collection drives.

For companies looking to get involved, Claire's Army invites Corporate Partners to offer restaurant gift cards, grocery store gift cards, and gasoline gift cards.
